Summer Starts at the TenTen Center
The end of the school year was busy as ever, and in typical YFC fashion, kept us on our toes. As the school year came to a close, YFC students didn’t hold back from showing up for plenty of YFC fun. Between Collide Conference, Rafting with Peak 7, a self-defense workshop, and 3v3 basketball tournament, we had plenty of activities to keep the whole Center busy right up to the end.
One highlight was our first Bunco Night! With the help of a few friendly volunteers, we had 25 students (mostly high school boys) battling it out at the bunco table. If you’ve ever played bunco before, you know it gets competitive, but I’ll bet you’ve never seen a game with this much energy! It was a delightfully unexpected good time.
Earlier in May, I (Lexi) got the privilege of rafting with a few students down the Spokane River on a boat called The S.S. Dumpling (named after a student’s beloved “rare” dumpling squishy). We survived the three sets of rapids and enjoyed every moment along the way. With our phones away and the impending fear of what rapids might lie ahead, the door for great conversations was wide open. As we often say, you get real with the people you have fun with. It doesn’t get more fun, or real, than an afternoon on the water.
Finally, we wrapped up the school year with a Last Day of School Party. With hot dogs and popsicles, we celebrated in the sunshine and soaked in the first bits of summer freedom. Summer brings mixed feelings for our students, but we’re always thrilled to be able to offer consistent summer hours for our students.
For those of you that are numbers people, here’s our Q2 data:
- Total Individual Students: 229
- Average Daily Attendance: 40
- Average Weekly Attendance: 85
- Total New Students: 57
- Average Attendance at Club: 25
This quarter was filled with plenty of fun activities, but it was also filled with some sweet moments. One of our students, who is also a new mom, continues to lean on YFC for support as she raises her baby. We love getting to love on her little one as well as walk with Mom in this new season of life. One particular afternoon, we were chatting and I asked this new mom who her best friend was. She responded, “probably you guys.”
A few moments later she continued to share “you know, a lot of people said it wasn’t good that I got pregnant, but I just feel like this baby is a gift from God.”
These are the moments that YFC is all about. Life isn’t often what we expect it to be, but alongside others we can lift our eyes to see that God is still moving. So many of our students are receiving gifts from God in unexpected places through unexpected circumstances. It’s a privilege to be with students in both mundane and unexpected moments, ready to invite Jesus into the stories of these students at pivotal moments. We have a lot to look forward to this summer, and we’re eager to see how God might move in our normal programming, random adventures, and camps and trips that lie ahead. Join us in praying for unexpected glimpses of God’s grace in the lives of these students this summer.
