Serving Up Opportunity : A Student’s Culinary Journey at the Hillyard Youth Center
At the Hillyard Youth Center, each day brims with the spirit of community as staff, volunteers, and meal teams come together to prepare dinner for around 50 students. We believe in nurturing our students holistically, and a key part of that is ensuring they receive nourishing, home-cooked meals every day. Unfortunately, many of our students lack access to quality food outside of school or our center. Our commitment to providing daily dinners has grown over the past year, ensuring students enjoy a wholesome meal between school and home.
Right after Christmas break, I checked in on a student, inquiring about his favorite moments and family traditions. He excitedly recounted cooking with his stepdad and creating a jalapeƱo casserole for their Christmas potluck. With a gleam in his eye, he expressed his desire to attend culinary school and asked, “Can I make that here for everyone? I have my food handlers card.” Without hesitation, I agreed, and together, we planned for his culinary adventure the following Wednesday.
When the day arrived, he dashed to the center from Rogers High School, bubbling with excitement to gather ingredients. Accompanied by two staff, he confidently navigated the grocery store, following his prepared list. Back at the center, he and I created the jalapeno casserole. I guided him in honing his knife skills, chopping onions and garlic, and emphasizing kitchen cleanliness and safety.
As the casserole baked for 45 minutes, he eagerly watched it, ensuring it didn’t burn. When it was finally ready, he served generous portions to his peers, proudly offering to pray over the meal. The joy on his face as he served his friends was unforgettable. Afterward, as we cleaned up, he eagerly asked when he could cook again.
By providing students with opportunities to serve each other and explore new passions, we aim to broaden their horizons and illuminate life’s countless possibilities.
