On the second Friday of every month, come rain or shine, there is a food distribution hosted by 2nd Harvest Food Bank in the parking lot of Millwood Presbyterian Church. Volunteers get there about 11:00 AM to setup tables for the distribution line and sort different kinds of foods that need to be bagged up. Seriously? Bagging ½ a ton of onions will get you teary eyed if the two hundred people in line waiting doesn’t. This last week two young YFC gals joined me as we made our way out to the Millwood neighborhood, gloved up, and went to work.

We distributed about 4 tons of food, equally just short of $14,200 worth of food on Friday. Customer service was our job. It was our duty to offer our strength and take 50lb boxes of food, or a watermelon and potatoes, to the car for people going through the line. Nicole and Brianna were nothing but smiles as they took food to folk’s cars, listened intently to people’s stories, and prayed hard for the people going through a tough situation. It is a good reminder that there is a blurred and non-definitional line that has people on each side of the distribution table. I am proud of our girls in their work and their understanding of communal service.

Nonetheless, she and I had a riveting conversation about the usual: school, boys, friends, boys, summer plans, and camping. Then we hit a topic I wasn’t expecting: her future here at YFC. If you had the opportunity to read Tom’s article last month about Emily, a North Central Student that informed Tom that she wanted his job someday, then this will resinate.

Brianna explained to me that JJ, West Central’s Ministry Director, had discussed with some of our kids that it is our vision/hope/dream glowed that the folks that are coming to the drop-in center and weekly City Life Club meetings that are hearing about Jesus today are the ones that will supersede us and lead the next generation. When Brianna heard this, she decided that she wanted my job. Oh, how I beamed. There was some serious job satisfaction for me right there – both professionally and spiritually.

Through a very casual interview, that I don’t even think that she was aware of that was happening, I am happy to announce that starting June 22nd, the Spokane YFC Administrative Office will have its first ever Summer Office Student Intern. If she wants the job, who am I to deny her the opportunity to demonstrate her skills and embark on new ones. Transforming youth, families, and neighborhoods…. one youth at a time.

Welcome to the team Brianna, I know you will be amazing!

- Sarah Hilsen, Office Manager (for now)

Kathy* was on her way home out past the Colbert area at around 8pm at night. As she pulled a little closer to the side of the road, she got stuck in the multitude of mud that had accumulated there. About ready to call a tow truck or roadside assistance, two kind gentlemen stopped and asked if she wanted/needed any help. They went up the road a bit and got some chains and came back and freed her from the mud. Kathy tried to offer them compensation, but they flat refused. The countered asking her that if she would like to offer something in return to make a donation in their honor to an organization. Kathy had one in mind. She called the YFC office and asked if she could contribute to the CAMP FUND.

Now, thanks to Two Kind Gentlemen, (4) kids have full ride scholarships to a week of fun in the sun, building relationships, and experiencing the Lord outside their normal world, a week of peace. Kathy explained that an act as simple as this one had reaffirmed in her that God had those four campers in mind when He inspired to love thy neighbor.

There is something special about sitting back and watching kids run around, laugh and dance. The beauty of YFC is that we provide the opportunity for kids, who were forced to “grow up” early on in their life, to be kids. Part of their childhood was robbed, stolen and thrown away. We get to redeem that. It is cool, fun, life-giving, and connected to the very heart of a redeeming God. This last week we left our after-school drop-in open several hours after it was supposed to close, simply because kids wanted to continue being “kids”. Life & ministry is sweet!

I love this ministry. My office is in the West Central YFC building and I get to enjoy seeing this ministry in action almost daily. It really is something special. From drop-in, to club, to the new discipleship group that JJ and Heather launched, I am very blessed to be a part of this thing. We recently purchased the new XBox Kinnect gaming system, which is played completely without a controller! Our West Central building is already legendary for it’s high tech gaming wall, and the Kinnect will only add to it. This thing is cool. The other day after school some kids were playing a dance game, and one of the kids was new to YFC. If Kinnect is what it takes to “connect” with some new kids, then let’s dance. Tom Davis.
